If I try and use 4111 1111 1111 1111 as the test credit card #, it works fine.
But, when I try to use 4007 0000 0000 0027 or 4222 2222 2222 2222 (with specific amount), it
starts giving me the 'The credit card number is invalid' error. Any ideas why ?

Generally the 4111-1111-1111-1111 is used to simulate approved transactions. The credit card number 4222-2222-2222-2222 is used to test specific decline AVS (Address Verification System) codes.
Please note that some test credit card numbers are also processor dependent. I would just stick to 4111****************** to generate an approval if this is the desired result.

Your Authorize.Net merchant account is configured with a back-end processor.
+ Global Payments (GPN)
+ First Data Nashville
I've had some test credit card numbers not work because of the configured back-end processor. Generally the 4111-1111-1111-1111 works with all supported processors.

CORRECTION IN LAST POST:
The test credit card number used to generate specific AVS responses is 13 digits, not 16 digits; it should read:
The reason why you received the error message "invalid credit card number" was because of this.
