Authorize vs. Capture

We have a Rapid Replacement program for our customers.  To be eligible the customer must provide a valid credit card.  A replacement is shipped immediately.  The credit card is only charged if the return is not received within 20 days.  Most of the product ranges from $500 to $2,000+ per unit.  Many consumers cannot afford this type of hold on their account.  Is there a method to authorize for a small amount but charge a larger amount?

No, authorizations can only be captured for the same amount or less than originally requested.  An attempt to capture for greater than what was authorized would be a violation of card issuer guidelines.
