CIM - Recommended time to run createCustomerProfileRequest

Hi, reading through the CIM XML dev guide, one of the first steps it lists is running createCustomerProfileRequest to create an  empty profile on Authorize.net.

I am just a little torn and confused as to when the best time to  run this would be... 
On our site I'd assume maybe half of registered users would end up completing orders.

 

  1. 1) Do I create the profile as soon as the user registers on my site, and have a bunch of unused empty profiles on Authorize?

or

 

  1. 2) Do I  wait until checkout to create the profile, and deal with not being able to reference a customer's profile ID until they have made a purchase?

Either solution would work, but I think the second scenario would probably be more manageable for you.  However, it is really just a matter of personal preference.
