Can a transaction or batch become unsettled? How are disputes handled?

Hi,

The Auth.Net Transaction Details API doc on pg 26 lists lots of possible statuses for a transaction.

Q: Once a transaction reaches the "settledSuccessfully" status, can it ever be changed back to something else?

If a customer disputes a charge, is the dispute reflected anywhere in Auth.net or is it "beyond" Auth.net.

If a customer's bank causes the merchant to suffer a chargeback, does the chargeback transaction flow through Auth.net or is it only between the merchant's merchant account provider to the merchant's bank?

Q Same for a batch: once a batch reaches status "settledSuccessfully" can it go back to something else?

Thanks,

Larry

Well, I know that credit card transactions can be disputed for quite some time after the charge, like up to 90 days, and settling usually happens relatively quickly. Don't know what a disputed charge would do in terms of status change, however. If you're voluntarily doing a refund, you void it if not settled; issue a credit if it's within the time limit (90 days?) and the amount of the credit is less than or equal to the original charge; or issue an unlinked credit if you're outside the time limit, the amount is more than the original charge, or is not related to a charge. Unlinked credit functionality has to be requested, it doesn't come standard with an Authorize.net account.

Don't know if any of that helps. I know it doesn't cover all of your questions.

Hi Larry,

To answer your questions:

Q: Once a transaction reaches the "settledSuccessfully" status, can it ever be changed back to something else?

- The answer is no.

If a customer disputes a charge, is the dispute reflected anywhere in Auth.net or is it "beyond" Auth.net.

-Authorize.Net would not have a record of chargeback activity in your Merchant Interface.

If a customer's bank causes the merchant to suffer a chargeback, does the chargeback transaction flow through Auth.net or is it only between the merchant's merchant account provider to the merchant's bank?

- Authorize.Net does not handle credit card chargebacks. You need to refer to you Merchant Service Provider if you have any questions about how chargebacks occur, how to dispute them, and how to reduce the risk of chargebacks.

Q Same for a batch: once a batch reaches status "settledSuccessfully" can it go back to something else?

-No because it already completed settlement.

Thanks!

-Joy
