getCustomerProfileRequest Search by email returns duplicate records

When I make a call via getCustomerProfileRequest and use an email address, I get an "Error E00039, duplicate records found". I don't have the customerprofileID just the email address.

How come the customerprofileids can't be sent back instead of returning an error?
